Shahzan Zafar is a Principal Pharmacist specialising in Electronic Prescribing and Medicines Administration (EPMA) and digital medicines management at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust and an Honorary Associate Professor with the University of Birmingham. He has extensive experience in the procurement, implementation, and optimisation of digital systems, leading multiple digital initiatives that improve system efficiency, clinical practice and patient safety.
With significant hands-on experience with closed-loop digital systems, Shahzan is a regular speaker on EPMA, digital medicines optimisation, and benefits realisation.
As Regional Chair of the West Midlands Chief Pharmacists’ Digital Pharmacy Group, he provides strategic leadership to support digital transformation across pharmacy services. Drawing on previous experience as a workforce lead pharmacist, he has played a key role in developing a regional digital literacy pathway to support pharmacy professionals in building the skills and confidence required to work effectively, in increasingly digital healthcare environments.
He is currently interim co-chair for the Digital Pharmacy Council, a national digital health network for pharmacy professionals, aimed at enabling collaboration, shared learning, and professional development across the digital pharmacy community. This behaviour change will shape a digital first culture which is fundamental to support the analogue to digital success as per the NHS 10 year plan.
