Chief Innovation Officer and founding director Geisinger Steele Institute for Health Innovation

Dr Karen Murphy is executive vice president, chief innovation officer and founding director of the Steele Institute for Health Innovations at Geisinger.

Under her direction, the institute designs and implements digital solutions across the organisation, utilising cutting-edge automation, AI, ML and data analytics to improve business and clinical processes, and enhance the care provided to patients.

These solutions have included apps that offer counselling and support to new mothers, and aid in the management of diabetes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Murphy’s department has also rolled out an automated bot that has handled over 67,000 calls, automated test result calls that save $75,000 per month, and an application that has scanned hundreds of thousands of Geisinger employees and visitors.

Dr Murphy also holds a number of academic posts, including at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, as well as serving as a mentor to numerous individuals.

Prior to her time at Geisinger, Dr Murphy worked for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, where she implemented policies to improve population health for rural communities, improved childhood immunisation levels and ultimately led on the opioid crisis as secretary of health.
