AI and clinical intelligence at scale: building the NHS infrastructure

Artificial intelligence in the NHS does not always require new data, it often requires new ways of using what we already have.
In this AI Stage panel, Solventum CTO, Hari Bala joins Dr Chris Plummer, CCIO at Newcastle NHS Trust, to explore how established technologies and trusted clinical workflows can be leveraged to solve emerging challenges across direct care, research and operational performance.

The discussion will examine how:
• Existing clinical documentation systems can support new models of care, including Follow-up of Finder-Thrombosis
• The expertise of clinical coders can be augmented through AI to unlock deeper insight and consistency
• Historic clinical letters and unstructured data can be transformed into meaningful, searchable intelligence for research, audit and patient safety
• Governance and deterministic controls ensure that innovation remains safe, explainable and clinically led
Rather than focusing on AI as replacement technology, this session will explore augmentation: using AI to amplify existing NHS expertise, improve oversight and extract value from the vast volumes of data already flowing through the system.
Attendees will gain practical insight into how Trusts can move beyond isolated pilots and instead build sustainable, scalable clinical intelligence using the assets they already possess.
