The NHS Long Term Plan emphasises that “80% of heart failure is currently diagnosed in hospital, despite 40% of patients having symptoms that should have triggered an earlier assessment.”

Until now, there were no quick, cheap, and consistently accurate point-of-care tests for heart failure. However, nearly all such patients would at some stage have had a stethoscope examination. Using electrocardiograms (ECGs) recorded by a smart stethoscope, artificial intelligence is able to perform the super-human task of identifying patients with heart failure. The AI technology has now been validated in over 1,000 NHS patients (Lancet Digital Health, 2022). Next comes the opportunity for deployment and evaluation within primary care clinical pathways, towards system-wide implementation of this potentially transformative technology.
